Gifts To Charities Have Gone Up But Are Less Than Gifts During Pre-recession Times

Charitable gifts have risen in 2010 over last year, but still are less than gifts during the pre-recession days, according to big name charities.

Specifically, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, raised $39.5 million dollars in 2008 to $40 million dollars last year. That $40 million is still smaller than the $42 million raised in 2007.

Boston College's Center on Wealth and Philanthropy forecasts that total US donations will be between $222 billion and $227 billion dollars for 2010. That is up from the the $217 billion donated in 2009 but lower than the $235 billion offered in 2007.

If contributions are mildly up, is that an indicator that the bad economy is on an up-turn? Or does it just indicate that individuals are admitting the economy as it is and assume that things are not going to be different?

It is surprising to know how much revenue is donated to charities yearly. $227 billion dollars! That is dramatically more than you would presume.
